Michael Sarian says that “A Lifeboat,” the title track in the middle of the eponymous album (A Lifeboat, Part I) “best represents what this project meant to us.” With Sarian on trumpet/flugelhorn and Putman on an aged keyboard in Sarian’s makeshift studio, their sessions gave the pair “a little window, a few minutes each week, where everything fell into place while the world outside seemed to be falling apart.” This track is an especially synchronized improvisational performance, in what Sarian surmises might be “the best [they’ve] ever played’ together. Recorded in a moment of tremendous uncertainty, the duo complements each other's instruments with ease, moving through moments of conversational, discordant melodies to reach an elegant, lasting harmony that "kept [them] afloat." The full album features poetry from 577’s Daniel Carter, and will be available in both CD & LP editions on April 23, 2021.
