about

Caribú was formed in saxophonist Michaël Attias’s Manhattan apartment, three friends venturing from across the city, finding togetherness in a shared love of experimental music. Drummer Francisco Mela would come down from the Bronx, while Bassist Kenneth Jimenez traveled up from Brooklyn, and together in Washington Heights, the trio would improvise for hours. Heroes to each other, the improvisational sessions were full of mutual inspiration and admiration—and seemed like a “beacon of light”, away from the blues of daily life. The resultant album is a delight, full of tantalizing saxophone riffs, a warm bassline, stand-alone drum solo’s and Mela’s iconic voice, contributing a unique, heartfelt Caribbean tradition. On the album’s eponymous track, “Caribu,” Mela delivers a full-throated melody, soon echoed by Attias’s lyrical saxophone and followed by Jiminez’s smooth bass lines. Tracks like “Festejo” and “From Time to Time” showcase the trio’s more experimental inclinations, contextualizing their sound in a modern tradition. The album, Caribú, will be available as a CD in October 2023.
